NEW CONCUSSION GUIDELINES
Karate Canada has published its new Concussion Guidelines which have been developed to help guide the management of athletes who may have a suspected concussion as a result of participation in KC’s activities.
The guidelines are based on the Canadian Guideline on Concussion in Sport from Parachute.
While these guidelines are applicable to Karate Canada activities, they may be adapted and / or utilized by PTSO members of Karate Canada and their clubs / dojos. These guidelines are not intended to replace or supersede provincial concussion legislation where applicable, and it is recommended that all PTSO members ensure their concussion protocols are in compliance with provincial requirements.
The guidelines include an education and recognition section, information on medical assessments and how KC will manage suspected concussions as well as the Return to sport protocol. Specific forms to be filled by the athletes’ doctor are also included in order to better track concussions.
Furthermore, a virtual Concussion Seminar was developed by our Medical Committee Chair to share important information about concussions and help educate our community to better recognize them. Participation in this seminar will be mandatory for all National Team athletes and coaches, national officials and provincial team coaches supporting athletes at Nationals. Upcoming dates and registration details have already been shared with the groups above.
