Maryam Kermani – 2025 Referee of the Year
2025 Referee of the Year and Karate Canada Referee Commission member Maryam Kermani shared why she gives back to her Karate community:
1. What does being named 2025 Karate Canada Referee of the Year mean to you?
It is a meaningful honor that recognizes my commitment to excellence, hard work, and perseverance over many years of officiating. It reflects the dedication, continuous learning, and responsibility required to uphold fairness and integrity at the highest level. while also highlighting the importance of female representation in leadership roles within Karate Canada.
2. What makes the Karate Canada Nationals a special event to officiate?
The Nationals bring together the highest level of athletes, officials, and coaches from across the country, setting the standard for Canadian karate. Officiating this event allows me to contribute to a fair, inclusive, and professional environment while serving as a visible example of women in leadership on the tatami.
3. If someone asked you why—what is your “why” for pursuing refereeing?
My “why” is to give back to karate community by ensuring integrity, fairness, and competence at every level of competition, while creating equal opportunities for all. I pursue refereeing specially to help pave the way for more women to step into officiating and leadership roles, advocate for gender equity and inclusion, and contribute to building a stronger future for the sport. There have been several outstanding senior female officials whom I have always looked up to as role models. I hope to establish the same standard of excellence for the next generation of women
