Athlete: 2003
Marc Hamon began practicing karate at the age of 11 and immediately began contributing to the advancement of sport in many ways. Participating in a variety of competitions in Canada and the United States, he nearly always finished on top of the podium, winning over 100 trophies and medals. No one wanted to be on the receiving end of his mae keri. The power of his strike could propel his opponent off the Tatami mat in a fraction of a second. At the 1993 World Games, Marc won gold in his category and silver in the open category. To date, no one in Canada has surpassed this double. From 1981 until his death in 2003 whe he was Canada’s most successful karate athlete, he always gave back to the sport, continuously passing his knowledge, experience and good humour onto the next generationn. His dojo was renowned for the excellence of its fighters. Over 150 students trained at Marc Hamon’s dojo, administered by Marc’s wife Guylaine Dumas. We remember his stentorian voice as he coached his students during competitions, and his immense joy when they landed a well-placed blow. He was instrumental in forming Karaté Québec in 1995.
