BRONZE MEDAL IN KARATE IN DUBAI FOR CANADA

Dubai, UAE, February 18th, 2019 – Over the weekend, Canadian National Team Roster members were in the United Arab Emirates for the Dubai Premier League K-1 competition, which was held from February 15th-17th. The Canadian delegation included 3 athletes, accompanied by one coach. A total of 769 athletes from 86 countries competed in this event. This weekend event saw a number of spirited performances on the part of Canadian athletes, including one bronze medal.

In women’s kumite, Haya Jumaa (-61kg), of Ontario, won her first three matches before losing to Gwendoline Philippe of France. Jumaa then defeated Carolina Videla Toro of Chile to take the bronze medal on Sunday.

Karate Canada President Mr. Craig Vokey notes that “Haya continues to perform on the world stage and has taken another important step toward qualifying for Tokyo 2020”. The World Karate Federation’s Premier League K1 Series are important preparation events on the road to the next summer Olympic Games.
