14 MEDALS IN ECUADOR FOR THE JUNIOR TEAM

Canada’s junior national karate team is celebrating a strong medal showing at the 2019 Cadet & Junior Pan American Championships, held in Guayaquil, Ecuador, August 28th-September 1st, 2019. A total of 79 Junior National Team Roster athletes competed over the weekend at this major continental event bringing together 806 athletes from 22 different countries. The Canadian team achieved 24 top-7 finishes at this event, including 14 medals.

Canadian female kumite athletes earned a total of six individual medals in Buenos Aires. Earning gold medals were Olivia Deane (Cadet +54kg) and Megan Rochette (Junior -53kg), while Véronique Carrière took the silver medal in the U21 -55kg category. Finishing with bronze medals were Yamina Lahyanssa (Junior -48kg), Kristin Dixon (Junior -59kg), Melissa Chan (U21 -50kg), and Parvin Mayan (U21 -61kg). Fifth-place finishes include Emmanuelle Jacques (Junior +59kg), and Danae Fell (U21 -55kg), and finishing in seventh place were Angelia Louise Grandea (Cadet -47kg) and Maroua Mokdad (U14 -47kg).

Male kumite athletes also performed very well, accumulating a total of five individual medals. Ethan Small (Cadet +70kg) and Fernando Aguilera (U21 +84kg) both took silver medals, while Etay Liberman (Junior -68kg) and Jérémi Lahaie (Junior -76kg) both earned bronze medals. Finishing in fifth place were Jade Wynne (U14 -45kg), Ilya Maclean (Cadet -57kg), Jasraj Khela (Junior +76kg), and Christopher Coady (U21 +84kg). In seventh place was Lucas Menard (U21 -75kg).

In female individual kata, Oonah Gamboa finished with a silver medal in the Cadet category, while Léa Morin placed 3rdin the Junior (16-17) division. Canada’s Cadet/Junior Male Kata Team, composed of Nathan Yuki McNeil, Andrew Kirchberger, and Vladimir Varin, won the bronze medal in the team event. Carter Dawood placed 7thin the U21 individual male kata division.

3 Canadian referees renewed their full license: François Persico, Derek J. Ryan and André Pronovost. Yuri Sokolovski upgraded his license to Kumite Judge A and Kata Judge A whereas Yaro Tarana was named on the PKF Referee Commission. Thank you and congratulations to all our officials!

The next competitive event of Karate Canada’s Junior National Team’s 2019-20 season will be the 2019 Cadet, Junior and U21 World Championships, taking place in Santiago, Chile, on October 23rd-27th2019.
