Canada Delivers Strong Showing at North American Karate Cup with Two Panamerican Games Qualification Spots Secured

June 23, 2026

MONTRÉAL, QC — Team Canada put in a solid performance at the North American Karate Cup on Saturday, June 20, at Complexe Sportif Claude-Robillard in Montréal, Québec, claiming multiple medals, including two gold and securing two critical qualification allocations for the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru.

The one-day event brought together athletes from Canada, the United States, and Mexico, with each nation fielding two competitors per category across kumite weight classes and individual kata. Gold medal performances in each category earned the winning athlete’s national federation a Pan American Games qualification allocation, raising the stakes in every match from the opening bout.

Canada’s gold medals were earned by Lily-Rose Nolet (F -61 kg) and Mahdis Ghamooshi (F -55 kg), both of whom topped their respective podiums to secure qualification allocations for Canada in those categories ahead of Lima 2027.

Yassin Miri (M -67 kg) and Claudia Laos Loo (F Kata) added silver medals to the tally, while bronze medals were claimed by Emmi German (F -50 kg), Mikayla German (F -50 kg), Hana Furumoto-Deshaies (F -55 kg), Karim Ebraheem (M -67 kg), Hilary Pond (F -68 kg), Kiandokht Ghodsi (F +68 kg), Indiana Carlyle-Byford (F +68 kg), Aryan Kohi (M -84 kg), Melissa Baillargeon (F Kata), Philip Bachand (M Kata), and Haruki Mori (M Kata).

Hosting this event in Montréal was a great opportunity for our athletes to compete in front of a home crowd and alongside nations we’ll see again on the Pan American Games stage,” said Rodney Hobson, Technical Delegate, Karate Canada. “Leaving with two qualification allocations and a strong medal count is encouraging – we’re on the right track.”

The event was held in conjunction with the Montréal Open and a training camp co-hosted by Karate Canada and Karate Québec, which brought together national coaches from all three competing nations — Javier Mantilla (USA), Manuel Candia-Rivera (Mexico), and Yevhen Motovylin (Canada) — alongside guest coaches Daphne Trahan-Perreault and Denis Beaudoin.

Karate Canada extends its gratitude to the officials and referees whose dedication made the event possible, as well as the full organizing committee for delivering a successful competition on home soil.

Team Canada’s Lima 2027 Pan American Games campaign continues throughout the international season.
