MESSAGE FROM KARATE CANADA’S PRESIDENT REGARDING COVID 19

March 17, 2020

Dear Karate Canada members and supporters,

With the growing concern and governmental restrictions surrounding the COVID 19 situation, Karate Canada is taking a number of actions and decisions to help safeguard the health and safety of our community. As already announced the Senior National Championships that were to take place this coming weekend in Calgary have been cancelled upon advice from the local health authority. The Board is keenly aware of how impactful this decision was and how much everyone had trained and prepared to come. It is hoped that we can replace this with an equivalent event in late summer or early fall.

As we speak, the WKF events in Rabat and in Madrid have been cancelled. The Commonwealth Karate Federation Championships scheduled for September 2020 have been postponed until 2021 and we await updates on upcoming PKF and WKF events. Information on these events will be disseminated as soon as it comes available.

Regarding the upcoming Junior National Championship, scheduled to take place in Toronto from May 1-3, we are still committed to that event at this time. However, there is a real possibility, depending on the position of Health Canada, as well as the provincial and local health authorities, that it will be impossible to hold that event. If we do need to cancel that event, we will attempt to reschedule it before the Junior Pan American Championships at the end of August.

At the moment, the only thing we can be certain of is uncertainty. However, all decisions made in regard to our athletes, officials, coaches, staff and volunteers will be based on the advice and direction of Health Canada, Sport Canada and the local and provincial health authorities in the region the event is to take place. Everyone’s patience and understanding is truly appreciated at this time.

Sincerely,

Craig Vokey
President
