RECAP OF DAY 2 AT SR WORLDS

Day 2 of the 2018 Senior World Championships featured the remaining Kumite athletes of the Canadian delegation competing in individual divisions.

In men’s kumite -75kg, the Dominican Anderson Soriano Solano got the best of Patrice Boily-Martineau (QC) in the first round. Nicolas Bisson (QC) had a close loss (0-1) against 2018 Asian Champion Abdullah Shaban (KUW), also in his first round, in men’s kumite -60kg. Ryan O’Neil (NS) won his first bout, but then lost a close match 0-1 to the future semi-finalist Hamoon Derafshipour (IRI).

In women’s kumite -55kg, Kate Campbell (NB) lost to Maya Schaerer (SUI) and in -50kg, Melissa Chan (BC) was defeated by Junna Tsukii from the Philippines, both losing in their first round.

Haya Jumaa from Ontario started her journey by beating Ayami Moriguchi (JPN), ranked 13thin the world. She then won her second match against the Slovenian Tjasa Ristic to fight the 2016 World Champion, Alisa Buchinger (AUT). Jumaa beat Buchinger 1-0 and moved to the fourth round where she lost a close match 0-2 against Italy’s Laura Pasqua.

Karate Canada is proud of all the competitors who took to the mats today, and wishes the best of luck to the ones competing tomorrow.
